If you want your children to embrace a green/eco-life then here are a few suggestions to get them started, after all its what they do that could make all the difference for their children.

• If your child isn’t potty trained, try to using fewer disposable nappies (well, when you can). You could even try using the old-fashioned cloth nappies, which can be washed and reused (also very economical, if not a little stinky!) There is also a practice called Elimination Communication (EC), it involves training your baby to communicate with you when they need to go to the toilet, so you can take them to the real toilet every now and then, thus reducing their dependency on disposable nappies.
• Try and make all your meals at home, thus reducing packaging waste and it also enables you to know exactly what you’re feeding your child. If you really want to go the whole nine yards then why not try to grown a vegetable garden, good for the family and economy, plus it help your children to appreciate food and where it comes from.
• Make your kids love the environment by letting them play and explore it. Let them roll around in the mud, look for creapy crawlies and try and find out what’s on offer in your local community. It’s also a great way to have family time.
• Make recycling fun by making it a game rather than a chore. They’ll learn how to do it and hopefully it become part of their everyday habits.
• There are some great green companies and products out there, so buy them green/eco-toys and books.
• Your little ones will always look up to you (except maybe in those terrible teenager years!) So you need to teach by example, so by living a green life you’ll automatically setting them good habits. Point out what and why you’re doing it when they’re young and hopefully it’ll seep in.

Babies grow so quickly, and unfortunately their clothes don’t grow with them. Babies will outgrow their clothing within months as their bodies are constantly changing. With global population increasing it means there is even more demand to make and distribute clothes for our children.

Like many other countries, Australian parents purchase clothes for their children that are only usually worn a few times and then placed in the bin, despite the life left in the clothing. There are some parents who always put their child in new clothing, no matter how much waste there is in the long term.

But using second-hand clothing is a good way to save money and our environment. If you don’t like the idea of your child wearing strangers’ clothes, see if you can get hand-me-downs from a family member or friend. At least then you can know where it has come from.

Once your child has gotten too big for their clothes, don’t just throw them in the bin. Instead, keep them for the next child or give them to a friend or family member. If you don’t know anyone expecting, give the clothes to a children’s charity or take them to a charity recycle bin.

You can even give old baby clothes to maternity wards of hospitals. They will be appreciative as there will always be parents who have rushed to hospital without their prepared bag.

But if you have to purchase new clothes consider purchasing organic cotton clothing. This type of baby clothing is more environmentally friendly than other types of fabric.

Having a baby is a life-changing experience for any parent. The new arrival brings joy, but with a new baby comes endless dirty nappies and little sleep. From the beginning we make choices for our children as what is best for them. The nappy debate over disposable or reusable nappies has been around for decades and is one that will continue for many to come.

Disposables:

Average disposable nappies are made from super-absorbent chemicals, paper pulp, and a range of plastics and adhesives. In Australia, most parents choose the disposable nappy as a method of convenience and low cost. According to a data survey, 89 percent of nappies changed are disposables, making the disposable nappy the current king.

The bad thing is majority of them end up in landfill and take years to fully decompose. The cost of these nappies is millions of dollars and now, there have been initiatives put in place top find ways to ‘recycle’ the disposable nappy.

One of the most effective innovations is the UR-3R operation. This plan aims to increase the amount of materials recovered from waste, reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill, whilst cutting costs of recycling. This process mixes wastes from houses and produces glass, aluminum, steel and paper. The UR-3R aims to remove the pieces of plastic so that they do not end up in the compost stream.

Reusables:

Reusable nappies have changed a lot since the days of the plain white cloth. From the old constant soaking, folding and fiddly safety pins reusable nappies have changed into user-friendly nappies. Now, they come in a variety of colours, fabrics and pop up or Velcro attachments. You can get three types of cloth nappies: flat nappies, shaped nappies and all in one nappies.

Reusable nappies are better for the environment, and in the long run will save you money. It may be a messy task, but there are also inner liners you can to keep your baby’s mess in the nappy. Simply wash and reuse, rather then throw away.

The cost of these nappies are fairly expensive if you get the more advances products. Basic cloth nappies are around $5 if you want to get started for a reasonable price. You can purchase them from supermarkets or baby retail outlets.
