Being eco covers all areas in your life from what food you choose to buy, where you travel, how you get to work to the shirt on your back. If you want to spring clean your wardrobe to make it more eco-friendly, here are some tips:

1. Buy organic clothes, there are plenty of amazing eco-designs out there.
2. Don’t iron unnecessarily and try not to tumble dry unless you have to. A clothes horse will save you on your electricity bill and will save your clothes as tumble drying can often shrink and ruin delicates.
3. Only wash your clothes when they’re actually dirty. Underwear will need a wash after one use but does all your clothes?
4. Avoid clothes that will need dry cleaning as most dry-cleaners use a fluid called tetrachloroethylene, which causes long-term pollution if it escapes into the waterways. If you have to get it done, check what chemicals your dry-cleaner uses.
5. Invest in Fairtrade cotton clothes, which ensures that the cotton growers get a fair deal.
6. Give away the clothes that you don’t use.
7. Buy second hand – you’ll be recycling, getting a bargain, giving to charity if you buy from a charity shop and you can tell everyone that it’s vintage!
8. Buy fewer clothes but buy on quality. Well-made clothes will last longer and gives you a chance to splurge.

It’s fair to say that when you think of an impassioned environmentalist it’s hard to go past the mental image of a bohemian who has been bereft from bathing for what smells like an eternity. While everyone is keen to do their piece for the planet – no matter how sadistic short showers in winter seem – not all of us are prepared to ditch the deodorant just yet.

Luckily for us, being environmentally aware and looking lush now goes hand-in-hand courtesy of U.S. fashion label, Gypsy 05. “Good planets are hard to find,” is the motto that first began Gypsy’s fight against environmental exploitation in the spring of 2005.

Gypsy 05 incorporates a persuasive palate of vibrant, vivacious colours, airy fabrics and silhouettes to further emphasise their nature-inspired theme and showcase effortless elegance.

In an effort to further demonstrate that being environmentally aware and looking awe-inspiring can be one and the same, Gypsy’s one of a kind designs, incorporate organic fabrics, low impact dyes and water based printing in every collection. Aiming to be more than just an artistic statement, Gypsy 05 suggests the importance of smelling the roses, as opposed to picking them; of getting inspired by the majestic beauty of the vast ocean, rather than polluting it.

After enjoy incredibly success overseas and becoming the label of choice for celebrities such as Miley Cyrus, Hayden Panettiere, Christina Aguilera and Ashley Tisdale, Gypsy 05 hopes to evoke the environmental essence of all Australians.
Gypsy 05’s message is simple: Recycle, Reduce, Re-planet and feel naturally confident and free while living environmentally friendly and appearing outstanding!

Never was there a better time to shop with a clear conscience!

Here are some to whet your appetite.

• Olsen Haus (www.olsenhaus.com) – Think sleek high heels with candy-pop colours and all 100% vegan!
• Paspaley (www.paspaleypearls.com) – This company is committed to the sustainable management of the wild pearl oyster habitat.
• Elsom (www.elsom.com.au) – Gap but with better cuts and designs, plus they use organic and sustainable textiles.
• Stella McCartney (www.stellamccartney.com) – Not only is she a talented and well respected designer with a long list of celebrity followers including Cameron Diaz, Gwyneth Paltrow and Paul McCartney (ahem!) But like her mum she is a big eco-defender; she never uses leather, has produced an organic capsule collection and skincare range and her company is 100% carbon neutral.
• Pandora (www.pandora.com.au) – Their new collection features wooden beads that are sourced from Forest Stewardship Council forests, meaning that these trees are only cut down in numbers which can be reproduced naturally.
• Tiffany & Co. – They were the first jewelers to sign up to the No Dirty Gold campaign (www.nodirtygold.org), which champions responsible mining sources.
• Gorman (www.gorman.ws) – Lisa Gorman is Australia’s premier eco-fashion designer. Her Organic range is always stylishly cool but she is always striving to make her company that bit more sustainable, from the fabric to the packaging to how it get shipped.

These incredibly cute trainers from Dunlop are everything a ‘green’ product should be; beautifully designed, iconicly fashionable and made from organic cotton and recycled rubber.

More and more companies are turning green and using organic products. This is certainly true from the fashion industry and many are producing some very good, high fashion, quality products. Dunlop has jumped on board by giving its iconic Volley a green makeover – the first planet-friendly children’s trainer! Perfect for tiny fashionistas with big consciences, it features planet friendly materials with an organic cotton upper and recycled rubber outsole.

Dunlop has said that “organic cotton is softer, more comfortable, smells cleaner and is less likely to trigger children’s allergies, which is important in the day to day life of your family.” The materials have been “grown and harvested in an environmentally sensitive way without the use of toxic chemicals, organic cotton is safer for farmers, for you, for your children and for the environment.”

Your little ones might not fully comprehend their environmental and fashion statement, but incorporating environmentally friendly choices into your family’s lifestyle is a fantastic way to teach and introduce your children to sustainable skills and practices that will stay with them for life. With the current trend toward eco-living it’s important for children to learn about healthy lifestyles, biodiversity and protecting natural resources from an early age, as this will be common throughout their lifetime. With sizes starting from infancy the First ‘Green’ Volley is accessible at every age making educating your child on the importance of green living as easy as slipping on a shoe.

1-	Buy less- Try to buy fewer clothes but spend more on good quality. Purchasing a good item that you know will last, is better than buying more clothing frequently. Well-made clothes will last longer, saving you money and limiting your throw out pile in the long run.

2-	Try second hand- purchase second hand clothing. Charity shops have a wide range of cheap clothing and buying these clothes helps to support the worthy cause.

3-	Give away clothes- this is very relevant for baby clothes. Children grow very quickly so more than likely the clothing will still be in good condition. You could even try swapping clothing with friends and family.

4-	Purchase Fairtrade clothing- currently the Fairtrade Foundation doesn’t cover all parts of the production line, but if you invest in Fairtrade cotton clothes then you can give growers a fair deal.

5-	Go with alternative materials- bamboo, hemp and soy all make good clothing products, so give them a try.

6-	Read around fashion mags- glossy fashion magazines may give you the trends, but they may not inform you on the environmental dangers of fashion. Get information from other sources such as Labour Behind the Label or No Sweat to get a better perspective.

7-	Wash clothes when they are dirty- washing uses a lot of water, not to mention power so don’t wash everything after you have simply worn it. Underwear is the exception but think twice before you wash.

8-	Don’t iron or tumble dry- if you don’t need to, don’t do it. Make sure the garment really needs ironing before you do it. Clothes can dry naturally on a washing line or clothes horse, you just need to take time.

9-	Try organic cotton clothing- there are many companies out there that make organic cotton clothes, so give them a try. You might be surprised.

10-	Avoid clothes that need dry-cleaning- most dry-cleaning companies will use a fluid tetrachloroethylene which can cause long term pollution if it gets in the waterways. If you have to get it dry-cleaned try and look for dry cleaners that use Green Earth Cleansing solution.

Babies grow so quickly, and unfortunately their clothes don’t grow with them. Babies will outgrow their clothing within months as their bodies are constantly changing. With global population increasing it means there is even more demand to make and distribute clothes for our children.

Like many other countries, Australian parents purchase clothes for their children that are only usually worn a few times and then placed in the bin, despite the life left in the clothing. There are some parents who always put their child in new clothing, no matter how much waste there is in the long term.

But using second-hand clothing is a good way to save money and our environment. If you don’t like the idea of your child wearing strangers’ clothes, see if you can get hand-me-downs from a family member or friend. At least then you can know where it has come from.

Once your child has gotten too big for their clothes, don’t just throw them in the bin. Instead, keep them for the next child or give them to a friend or family member. If you don’t know anyone expecting, give the clothes to a children’s charity or take them to a charity recycle bin.

You can even give old baby clothes to maternity wards of hospitals. They will be appreciative as there will always be parents who have rushed to hospital without their prepared bag.

But if you have to purchase new clothes consider purchasing organic cotton clothing. This type of baby clothing is more environmentally friendly than other types of fabric.

Hemp was one of the most important crops in the 18th century. The seeds were used in foods and the fibres used to make papers and clothing. Although extremely useful, it was phased out of the textiles industry in the 1700 but now, the hemp crop is being brought back into the fashion world.

There has been a noticeable revival in hemp cultivation and farmers have capitalized on the non-toxic, easy to grow qualities of the hemp plant and the friendly textile. Now, every part of the hemp plant is used to make products from books, bags, health products, fabrics and clothing. The seeds, fibres and flowers of the hemp plant make the clothing one of a kind and are extremely durable.

Hemp fabrics are comfortable to wear and allow the clothing to ‘breathe’ due to the nature of the fibres. This clothing is good for summer wear as supporters claim the clothing stops up to 95% of the suns UV rays and also have anti-fungal and antibacterial properties.

But hemp cultivation is illegal in most countries, making the clothing hard to obtain. It is illegal as the leaves and flowers can be used to make marijuana. But you can purchase hemp clothing at online stores in Australia. Even fashion designer Giorgio Armani says that hemp products produce a strong clean yarn that make them cool in summer and warm in winter.
