Five years ago the green market was full of producers with good intentions but not great products. However this has all changed, there are some fantastic products in the green aisle these days from fashion to beauty to food to gadgets. They’re setting a bar for all producers, not just the greenies.

An example of this is Sexy Hair Organics; nourishing hair care products containing up to 95% organic ingredients and free from parabens, petrochemicals, dyes and sulphates. The range has a delicious signature fragrance combining mimosa, lily and sage – yummy! They also contain Pureganic extract – an organic essential oil grown and extracted in compliance with the guidelines of the USDA Final Rule National Organic Program.

The Moisturizing Treatment is our favourite; it nourishes and makes the hair soft without weighing it down like some other moisture intense treatments. Plus is smells good enough to eat.

The range was created by LA-based celebrity session stylist Michael O’Rourke to get high fashion hair without the hard work. The range includes of over 60 products to cater to customers who love to indulge their hair and skin.

Skin care is an important part of our natural cleaning routines and we need to ensure we use products that are chemical free. Usually good face and skin care creams contain a range of un-natural chemicals and toxins that are bad for the environment. But you can purchase natural toiletries and cosmetics to care for your skin or you can make it yourself.

Less is more when it comes to good natural products and Galen’s cold cream is perfect for soothing dry and calloused hands. This recipe has two main ingredients- olive oil and rosewater. The rosewater has anti-bacterial properties which prevents blemishes, wrinkles and sooths sunburn or stressed skin whilst the olive oil makes a good moisturiser- combine them together and you have a rich nourishing cream.

How to Make Galen’s Cold Cream:

Ingredients- 1/4 cup Rosewater, half a teaspoon of borax powder, 1/2 a cup of olive oil and 2 tablespoons grated beeswax.

Firstly, dissolve the rosewater in the borax powder and set it to the side. Mix the olive oil and beeswax together in a separate container and then place in a pan with 1-2 inches of water.

Heat this on low or microwave it until the wax mixture is melted, stirring it gently. Bring the rosewater and borax to the same temperature as the wax and oil mixture and slowly mix the two together. Stir as you do this.

As it cools down it will thicken up, so make sure you continuously stir until it is well blended. Pour the final product into a different container with a lid and wait until it completely cools. To use it, simply apply it to your skin, let it sit a few minutes and wipe it off.

There are so many toiletry products on the market that we can choose from. So many choices means a lot of chemicals and even more plastic. Making conditioner at home is a great way to use our earth’s natural ingredients and keep our environment plastic free.

Buttermilk is a great organic source to use and your hair will thank you for it in the long run. Blow-drying your hair daily (not to mention straightening) will dry out your hair and buttermilk is a good nourishing source.

Home made deep conditioning treatments can reduce your carbon footprint, increase your savings and make your hair naturally healthy. Hair salons tend to use tonnes of water, chemicals and energy to wash and clean your hair- so why not try and do it yourself?

This natural toiletry product should be left on the hair for at least 30 minutes and then rinsed thoroughly using warm water.

Buttermilk Hair Conditioner:

Ingredients- ½ cup organic buttermilk, 1 cup plain organic yoghurt, 1 organic egg yolk,1 tsp raw coconut oil

Method-
1.	Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and apply it to your scalp.

2.	Let it sit for at least half an hour and rinse.

The products we use on our skin everyday may make us feel beautiful and clean, but it is full of chemicals that could potentially damage our skin and the environment. Any typical bathroom cabinet will include these potions and lotions and it is important as a consumer you know what is in your makeup and toiletries. Below is a list of some of the common chemicals in toiletries and cosmetics.

Parabens-
These synthetic chemicals are used as antimicrobial preservatives and are usually found in toiletries like deodorants, baby wipes and moisturiser. Research has found that widespread use of these chemicals could be partly to blame for men’s infertility over the last 60 years. Typical parabens include methylparaben ( E218) ethylparaben (E214) propylparaben (E216) and butylparaben.

Phthalates-
Used to increase flexibility, this substance are widely used plasticisers and are used to make PVC but are also found in some perfumes and nail polishes. This chemical can also been known to disrupt hormones and in some cases has effected the liver, kidneys, heart, lungs and even blood. To avoid the phthalate chemical try and purchase products that are phthalate free.

Triclosan-
This antibacterial agent stays on surfaces after cleaning and is used in toiletries such as toothpastes, mouthwashes and acne treatments. However, when mixed with chlorinated water, this chemical can produce chloroform gas making a deadly combination.

Toulene-
This solvent is derived from crude oil and can be found in nail polish and lacquers. It can also be found in paint thinners, silicone and disinfectants. Low to medium levels of toluene can cause confusion, tiredness, weakness and memory loss. But high levels of the chemical can make people feel constantly lightheaded, dizzy and in extreme cases can cause death.

Xylene-
This chemical has been linked to skin problems and is a solvent (also known as xylol) that is found in nail polishes and lacquers. High levels of this chemical can cause severe headaches, lack of muscle co-ordination, dizziness and confusion. It can also cause skin irritation, eye, nose and throat irritation and even stomach trouble.

Acetone-
This is a common solvent used in nail polish and some perfumes. It is a toxic chemical that, if ingested can harm the lungs. Acetone doesn’t build up in waterways or in soil or animals but it can pose a significant risk to our aquatic systems, by limiting the oxygen supply.

Millions of women around the world buy billions of disposable feminine hygiene products every year. And although it can sometimes be an uncomfortable subject, the disposable products are adding a huge amount of waste to our already existing landfill, and ending up in seas and rivers.

As well as the environmental problems associated, these products also have some health risks too. Modern products for women are usually made from a mix of both cotton and synthetic materials and because of their absorbency they can be a breeding ground for Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). Although there are risks involved, women choose these products as it is the most convenient and comfortable way. These products are also more cost effective and easily obtainable.

But there are other organic alternatives to feminine hygiene products that can be just as effective. These natural products avoid the use of chemicals and plastics and the use of chlorine bleaching which is better for the environment and your skin. Some of these products include organic cotton tampons, washable cotton pads and menstrual cups. You can get more information on organic feminine hygiene products from a variety of websites.
