When it comes to saving the environment, every little step counts. If you want to go green, an earth friendly shopping list is a great step in the right direction. Purchasing organic products is primarily the best thing you can do for the environment and your family. This simple shopping list is just a few ways you can buy eco-friendly foods.

1-	Organic produce- the environmental benefits of buying organic produce are huge and when you purchase these products you will support the environment, farmers and yourself. There are many organic vegetables and fruits you can purchase, if you’re not sure about it, ask the salesperson.

2-	Organic animal products- purchasing these products will help your health and the environment. Certain meats have more pesticides than others due to the diet the animals are fed. Buy animal products from a local, sustainable and organic farm. This way you know that the animals aren’t unnecessarily hurt and the meat will be fresh.

3-	Reusable shopping bags- opt for green earth-friendly bags that you can reuse. Don’t use paper or plastic bags and remember to bring your canvas bags when you go shopping. Canvas can hold more and are less likely to break, and will save from all the left over plastic that will end up in landfill.

4-	Non-toxic Cleaning Products- most of the cleaning products on the shelves contaminate our water and air, and also contain chemicals harmful to our health. Try and purchase green cleaning products that are safe for us, as well as our environment. Try and make your own cleaning products from natural ingredients like backing soda, white vinegar, alcohol and lemon.

5-	Bio-Bags-these bags are biodegradable bags that break down naturally and quickly when they are exposed to nature and micro-organisms. These green bags will save money and will keep your fruits and vegetables fresh for longer.

6-	Biodegradable Doggy/Litter Bags- part of being a responsible owner is to clean up after your pet when you’re outside your property. Putting your dogs mess inside a biodegradable bag will work well as they will both decay. These bags are earth friendly as they decay into CO2, water and humic matter. You can throw the waste bag into yoru compost pile and it will decompose naturally.

7-	GDiapers- gDiapers are a new alternative to disposable and cloth nappies. The diapers consist of flushable inserts that are biodegradable and made from natural fibre.

8-	Hemp Clothing and Linens- hemp products are naturally hypo-allergenic so those that suffer from allergies can be at ease. Clothing and linen made from hemp are far more durable, keep warm in the winter and cool in summer and are eco-friendly.

9-	Bamboo Kitchen Products- Bamboo is a renewable plant and it is a fast growing wood that you can use for kitchenware. Bamboo plates and flatware are naturally beautiful and durable.

10-	Natural Personal Care Products- we all need personal products to care for our bodies but by using organic products we can avoid exposure to ourselves and the environment from harsh chemicals. Additives, preservatives and chemicals added to deodorants and cosmetics can be harmful to your skin and the environment. Make sure you clean with natural body products that are free from added scents and chemicals.

Having a vegetarian diet has always been a good way to stay fit and healthy, but now researches have found that eating vegetarian foods can help reduce your carbon footprint too. This gives you another reason to choose vegetarian, healthy and environmentally friendly too.

How much this diet cuts your carbon footprint depends on a number of factors. It will be reduce dramatically depending on how much you are willing to cut meat (and other animal products) from your diet and how strictly you stick to the all plant-based diet.

Based on a study in 2006 called “Diet, Energy and Global Warming”, the university of Chicago researchers found that 47 percent of the calories we obtain comes from animal sources, resulting in a carbon footprint of around 2.52 tonnes per year.

If you have a heavier diet of read meat, around 50 percent then the carbon will be about 3.57 tonnes per year. Your carbon footprint will be reduced again if you eat a diet that has 25 percent calories from fish, which will work out to be about 1 ton carbon.

Both red meat and fish both have a bearing on your foods carbon footprint, the vegetarian diet recommended best for the environment.

Farmer’s markets are a good way to get fresh and healthy fruit and vegetables, and help out our farmers. Here are 10 reasons why you should make the trip to the fresh food market.

1-	Less food miles- As all of the produce is local, the markets cut food miles down as there is no food transportation. This is good for the environment as well as keeping the producers costs down.
2-	Less waste- most of the produce is loose and unpacked so it means there is less rubbish to throw out.
3-	Fresh Goods- Getting meat and vegetables from a farmers market means you’re always guaranteed to have fresh products. They will be the freshest products you can buy.
4-	Better practice- these markets encourage more sustainable production practices for farmers. These may include organic farming or pesticide-free.
5-	Get more- These markets have a reputation for offering more variety. There will be different products grown on different farms and can offer you more than supermarkets.
6-	Customer service- you can ask the farmers questions directly, rather than ask someone who has no idea. These people produce the food so they know all about where it comes from.
7-	Local business- getting food from the farmers market means giving money to local businesses. It helps the local economy as well as increasing employment.
8-	Supporting producers- these markets cut out the middleman and allow farmers to make their own prices and deals.
9-	Tradition- farmers markets bring back the sense of traditional life and traditional country ways and farming.
10-	Community- the community feel of a farmers market is relaxed and makes you feel comfortable. Knowing you can asks questions about the products and knowing you have truly fresh fruit and vegetables is one that supermarkets cannot supply.
