koalaSeptember is also known as “Save the Koala Month”. It’s a charity that wants to raise awareness of our national icon’s plight. Many people probably don’t realise that the koala is under threat because they’ve seen many at the zoo. However, Deborah Tabart from the Australian Koala Foundation says; “There are only about 100,000 koalas left in the wild, and with habitat loss as their leading threat, it takes individuals like you and me to help save them. Buying one of the foundation’s ‘No Tree No Me’ bumper sticker for $1 and displaying it is a great way to help raise funds for research and conservation projects, as well as awareness.

Approximately 80% of original koala habitat has already been destroyed, forcing koalas to live alongside people in urban areas. This, says the foundation, means property owners have a special responsibility to take the needs of koalas into consideration. One way to make your property more koala-friendly is to keep particular species of eucalypts and other native vegetation on your block. These trees are not only homes for the koalas, but they also provide food, shelter and nesting sites for other native animals and birds.
