MOSQUITOES were to blame for the infamous Bairnsdale Ulcer on the Bellarine Peninsula in Victoria in recent times.

The Bairnsdale Ulcer was a inflamed red ulcer that would become bigger and bigger on the skin and become even deadly.

There were many cases to be found on the Bellarine in 2006 and have since become rare since a massive helicopter spray on the Bellarine which helped prevent mosquitoes.

There were at least three deaths reported on the Bellarine from the Bairnsdale Ulcer.

Now, the mosquitoes have caused more than an uproar in Brisbane with Dengue Fever fears.

It is understood this is sparked by 10 days of consistent downpour of rain.

It has become the perfect conditions for the vicious saltmarsh mosquitoewhich eats through clothing.

The Age reports the mosquito infestation is likely to get worse with much more humid temperatures predicted over summer.

It means that dengue fever is on the radar.

Brisbane has had a history with the plague.

More than a century ago Brisbane was essentially shut down by a plague of mosquitoes and mosquito-borne disease.

The 1905 dengue epidemic affected 75 per cent of the city’s 125,000 residents. The introduction of reticulated water and lawn mowers meant dengue was eradicated in the 20th century
