Our water levels are still low, and to retain enough water for now and the future we need to implement strategies to save water. Here are some tips to save a little a day.
Dripping taps-
Make sure you fix any taps that are dripping or leaking. Excess water coming from taps can be extremely annoying, not to mention it can waste as much as 5,500 litres of water a year. It can be as simple as getting a new washer or can be an easy Do it Yourself task.
Shower-
Have a shower instead of a bath. Baths use around 80 litres of water whereas a 5-minute shower uses only 35. Remember to keep it quick, as a longer shower can waste more water than a bath.
Washing Food-
If you wash your fruit and vegetables make sure you do this in a bowl rather than under a running tap. Once you have washed them, use the water again on your garden or house plants.
Car wash-
Use a bucket when you wash your car, do not use the hose. If you need to urgently wash your, go to a specialized car wash centre. They have water saving practices in place light recycled water and high pressure fast hoses.
Water butts-
Make use of the rainwater by collecting in it water butts so you can water plants.
Water pipes-
A burst water pipe can waste a lot of water, not to mention do a lot of damage to your home. Make sure that all water pipes and outdoor taps are sturdy before winter.
Toilet-
Ask a plumber to install a low-flush toilet system. This will use less water per flush and you can set whether you need a long or short flush, keeping water to a minimum. Also get water saving shower heads and taps installed while the plumber is there.
Water-
We all need drinking water but instead of waiting for the tap to run cold, keep some water in the fridge.
Kettles-
Done overflow the kettle or saucepan, only boil the amount of water you need. Tray and fill only what you need, rather than tip some out later.
Taps-
Don’t leave the tap running. Whether you are brushing your teeth or waiting for the water to heat up, don’t let it run. A running tap can use five litres of water a minute and worse if you leave it going.
Dishwashers-
Fill the entire dishwasher before you turn it on. Half-loaded dishwashers use more water and power than full ones.
